To your average homeowner, a landscaper and an arborist are generally thought of as pretty much the same, if not the same than at least interchangeable. Garden work is garden work, right? Wrong.
While they have some things in common, the truth is that landscapers and arborists are quite different. It is important for homeowners to understand the distinction in each profession so that they can make the most informed decision regarding work on their property.
So, what is the difference? Landscapers are typically involved in lawn installation and maintenance; weeding; mulching; irrigation; and creation of gardens, foundation beds and hardscapes (stone walls and walkways etc.).
Arborists focus more on the health and vitality of trees and shrubs. Our training has taught us how to properly plant a tree/shrub and prune to create a desired structure and prevent major pruning wounds years later.
According to the International Society of Arboriculture, “An arborist, by definition, is an individual trained in the art and science of planting, caring for, and maintaining individual trees.” This includes tree/shrub removal, pruning, cabling and bracing, fertilisation and soil management.
Almost every job site that I visit has trees or shrubs that are failing or declining because of improper planting techniques. Many of the specimens were planted by the homeowner or their landscaper.
